Twenty four people died on Friday morning when a bus they were travelling in overtuned in Hex River Pass near De Doorns in the Western Cape.

An SABC Journalist reported that the people were members of the 12 Apostle Church in Christ coming from an annual church service which took place in Secunda, Mpumalanga. They were on their way to Cape Town.

According to News 24, the driver lost control of the bus, resulting in it veering off the road and overturning.

Initially, 22 people were reported dead. However, the death toll rose to 24 a few hours later. Three of those who died were children. There are fears that the death toll may rise again as eight passengers are said to be “very critically injured” (The Eye Witness). Three of the very critically injured passengers are children. Fifteen other passengers were seriously injured and twenty two were lightly injured.

The accident came three weeks before the Easter holidays, which are notorious for their high number of accidents that claim 150 – 300 lives annually.
