On Friday a horrific accident involving around 27 cars occurred in Constantia Kloof, killing three people and critically injuring over 18. Yesterday it was reported that three people died on the scene and the other 18 were rushed to hospital. According to unconfirmed reports, two more people died in hospital, bringing the death toll to five.

The accident involved about 17 vehicles on the scene, two trucks and another eight vehicles in the parking lot. According to Johannesburg emergency services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi, “An 18-wheeler truck collided with a delivery lorry along William Nicol Drive. The lorry then turned towards oncoming traffic, resulting in a multi-car pile up.”

The truck dragged some of the vehicles down the road with it. Some of the vehicles were so badly ripped apart that they were unrecognizable. Personnel from the fire department had to use heavy equipment to remove those trapped inside vehicles.

The cause of the accident is still unkown. However, it is believed that the driver of the truck lost control of his vehicle. The police are still investigating.
