Suspended ANC Youth League member Andile Lili, the man responsible for dumping faeces at the Cape Town International Airport two weeks ago, insulted Magistrate Jannie Kotze after being denied bail at the Bellville magistrate court on Monday, News24 and Independent Online reported.

Lili is one of the nine men who were arrested for dumping faeces at the Cape Town International Airport on the 25th of June. The men were detained until their formal bail hearing, which took place last week on Tuesday (2 July). The magistrate made his ruling on Monday (8 July). Seven of the men were denied bail because the magistrate believed that if released, they could commit the same offence again. Only two of the nine men who were arrested were granted bail on the grounds of their medical conditions.

Infuriated by the magistrate’s decision, Lili shouted racist insults at him. “You white racist, you magistrate, you fu##ing racist, you don’t care. We can’t allow our people to live in those conditions,” he said. He continued: “He is only lambasting us because we are black. We are ready to spend 30 years in jail. Why must we be treated like pigs? It’s enough now.”

At the time of their arrest, the seven men who were denied bail were out on bail, on condition that they do not participate in any protest. At the beginning of June some of them were involved in the dumping of faeces at the Cape Town train station and at the doorstep of the Western Cape Legislature.

The dumping of faeces at the airport is said to have caused flight delays, which resulted in the loss of aviation revenue of about R500 000. The accused men have been charged under the Civil Aviation Act and could spend up to 30 years in jail if found guilty. The case was postponed until August 5.
