Climate change is one of the major environmental threats the world is currently facing. The carbon dioxide that we release into the atmosphere is known to prevent heat from escaping out into space, thereby causing the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect results in high temperatures on earth. If nothing is done to minimize the amount of carbon emitted into the atmosphere, it is feared that ice at the poles will melt, which will have many unfavourable consequences. The National Post and EcoFriend reported that the melting of ice could threaten Canadian Ice hockey, an important component of the culture of Canada. Besides this, global warming may have more serious consequences e.g. the rising of the level of sea water and the extinction of many species which live in icy environments.
