Last week, Oscar Pistorius successfully appealed his bail conditions. His defence team put emphasis on the fact that while Oscar is innocent until the trial concludes in a guilty verdict, he should be allowed to earn a living. Oscar Pistorius is financially dependent on contracts with sponsors including Nike, Thierry Mugler and eyewear manufacturer, Oakley. He is obligated to earn the income that comes to him on the basis of these agreements.

Oscar Pistorius is due in court on 4 June to further shed light on the events of that fateful morning at his home. He is now allowed to travel outside of South Africa if it is part of his income-earning activities. His lawyers made it clear that Oscar is no different to any other person who is out on bail and as such, he should also be allowed to work. Travel is, of course, a huge part of the athlete’s career.

Based on information from News24, the International Association of Athletics Foundation announced that because Pistorius has not been convicted, the IAAF has no grounds to deny him entry into official competitions. This means that if Oscar qualifies to race, there is nothing to stop him.

Be that as it may, it is reported that the IAAF also made it clear that it was not in a position to order event organisers to invite athletes to their events. Oscar Pistorius would still need to qualify to compete or receive an invitation to athletic meetings like any other athlete. The association cannot guarantee that Pistorius will receive a warm welcome from event organisers, fellow sportsmen and the fans if he does eventually decide to compete.

Considering the fact that Pistorius has not been found guilty of a crime, Britain has no reason to deny him entry into the country. Couple this with the recent IAAF decision; it seems quite possible that Pistorius may indeed compete at the London Anniversary Games at the end of July.

The Pistorius family maintains that the paralympian has no immediate plans to either travel or to compete. The family is facing a double tragedy as both Oscar and his brother Carl could end up in jail for a long time after the deaths of two women in separate incidents.
