Kaizer Chiefs Win the League with Three Games Remaining

Yesterday night Kaizer Chiefs wrapped up their impressive form in the PSL campaign, winning the league with three games remaining. They beat Polokwane city 4-1 in a much deserved game played at the Fnb stadium.

Kaizer Chiefs started the game like a house on fire. George Lebese opened the scoring in the 27th minute. Bernard parker scored in the 32nd minute as Chiefs went into the break leading 2-0. The 2nd half was no different as Kaizer Chiefs picked up where they left off. There was a number of missed opportunities until Tshabalala assisted Mathew Rusike in the 55th minute for his first league goal of the season. Polokwane city came back with high hopes and pulled one back through Rendani Ndou in the 57th minute. Rusike added a 2nd for himself in the 65th minute to make it 4-1 and it proved to be the end of Kosta Papic’s attack-minded forces.

Chiefs from there on had numerous missed chances, pulling easily through the City’s defence. The game ended 4-1 and joy for the glamour boys as their fans stormed onto the pitch. Mathew Rusike was crowned man of the match. Stuart Baxter’s men only conceded 12 goals this season. It looked as if the nerves would catch up to them ahead of the encounter but they really did a splendid job in proving themselves after exiting both Nedbank cup and Champions League, losing to smaller competition. They sealed the title ahead of 2nd placed Mamelodi Sundowns, who played Platinum stars to a 1-1 draw in Pretoria last night.

Two years ago it was a different story, the glamour boys losing crucial games towards the end of the season and giving way for Sundowns to get 1st place and claim the league title. This so far was a dominant season for Kaizer Chiefs, and if they manage to beat Sundowns’ record of 65 points in one league season it will very much be the most dominant in the PSL era. With only 3 games to play, their quest is not over. They need only 3 points out of a possible 9. Chiefs’ season started with a visit to Free State stars. They comfortably won the game 1-0. After that they then cruised to a record 19 match unbeaten run. This is Stuart Baxter’s 2nd league trophy in 3 seasons since he took over the club in 2012.
