Kwaito singer Mduduzi Tshabalala, popularly known as Mandoza, has died after a long battle with cancer. It is reported that he died on Sunday on his way to hospital after experiencing trouble breathing.

Mandoza was diagnosed with pharyngeal cancer in 2015. This year it was reported that the cancer had spread to his brain, resulting in him losing his sight.

Mandoza’s fighting spirit masked the seriousness of his illness and gave his fans hope that perhaps he would recover. His last public performance was on the 10th of September at the SABC’s “Thank you” concert at Orlando stadium, where local artists thanked the public broadcaster for the 90% local music quota.

Tributes and condolence messages from fans and prominent public figures have been pouring in since the news of Mandoza’s death emerged. Among those who extended their condolences was President Jacob Zuma, who described Mandoza’s death as a great loss to the nation. “South Africa has lost one of its pioneers whose music appealed o a cross section of our people, young and old and was known to have achieved the unique crossover culturally to be enjoyed by both black and white South Africans. It is a great loss to the nation and we wish to extend our deepest condolences to his wife Mpho, his family and hordes of fans. Mandoza will be sorely missed. May his soul rest in peace,” said President Zuma.

Mandoza is survived by his wife and three children.
