orlando-piratesThe hopes of winning the league for the third time in a row have started to diminish for Orlando Pirates after they played a 0-0 draw with Pretoria University at the FNB stadium on Saturday.

The Buccaneers desperately needed a win in order to close the gap between them and their arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs, who are currently sitting on top of the league with 47 points. Pirates are sitting at the second place with 43 points. Both teams have played 22 games.

With eight games still to go, anything is still possible. However, Orlando Pirates are now under a lot of pressure to win their next games. They have to win at least two games and Chiefs has to lose twice in order for Pirates to take the top position. A win and a draw for Pirates will not be enough because of Kaizer Chiefs’ goal difference.

Chiefs have scored a whopping 39 goals since the season started and have conceded 14 goals, which gives them a goal difference of 25. Pirates on the other hand have scored 28 goals and conceded 13. Their goal difference is 15, which means if the two teams have the same number of points, Chiefs will still be at the top.

After playing 22 games, Chiefs have been beaten only once. Although the game of soccer is unpredictable, it is against the odds for them to lose twice in their 8 remaining games while Pirates wins all 8. Today Chiefs will face Bloemfontein Celtic at the Free State Stadium at 15:30. The outcome of the game may give us a clear indication of who is likely to be crowned the champions this season.

It’s too early. The bucs can still win the league. Chiefs can easily lose half of the remaining games.
