Carl Pistorius, the elder brother of the murder-accused athlete, Oscar Pistorius, was on Friday seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident along the N1 Freeway. Carl was apparently traveling from Polokwane, where he had attended a business meeting and was returning to his home in Pretoria.

According to the family spokesperson, Anneleise Burgess, the accident happened around Modimolle area in Limpopo and involved another car. She said that traffic was backed up going forwards Polokwane and one car decided to swerve right into oncoming traffic just as Carl, who was travelling in a convoy with a business partner, was approaching, which led to a head on collision.

According to another family member, Arnold Pistorius, who is their uncle, Carl Pistorius was ferried to a private hospital late on Friday evening, where he was admitted into intensive care unit. Arnold further confirmed that Carl had suffered several fractures, which include his fore arm, leg and left foot. The family were, however in agreement that Carl was out of danger according to the doctors who attended him even though they maintained that he was in a critical condition.

This is not the first time Carl was in an automobile accident. In 2008, he was in a collision when a woman motor cyclist crashed into his car. The woman died six days later, resulting in him being charged with culpable homicide. In his defence, his legal team argued in court that the 36 year old woman, referred to in court as Maria Bernard, was intoxicated and had been drinking earlier on the day of the accident. It was not until later in 2013 that he was acquitted of the charge. The same kind of fortune has however, up to now, evaded his brother, Oscar, who is on trial for the murder of his model and law student girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. While Oscar admits to shooting Reeva, he argues that this was in error as he mistook her for an intruder. The prosecution, on the other hand, contend that he deliberately shot her in a temper rage after a heated argument in the early hours of Valentines Day in 2013. His trial continues on the 7th of August.
