Death toll rises in the Bergville accident

The death toll in the taxi accident that occurred between Ladysmith and Bergville has risen to 11. Ten school children were killed and several injured late on Saturday after a taxi they were travelling in allegedly hit a cow on the R616 between Bergville and Ladysmith. The driver also died later.

KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department MEC Willies Mchunu and Education MEC Senzo Mchunu have visited he site where this accident occurred. This is said to be the third accident that took the lives of many school children over a period of one month, putting the number of school children who died in KZN roads over the past 30 days to 28. The cause of this accident is still being investigated.

In an effort to put an end to this road carnage, Senzo Mchunu has cancelled all school trips in KZN including matric farewell trips. All matric dances will now take place within the school premises.
