Sunday afternoons will never be the same again. This is what thousands of mourning Metro FM listeners said on social networks after learning about the death of legendary disc jockey, Eddie Zondi. For some, it is still hard to believe that they will never again hear Eddie’s soothing voice (live) on Sunday afternoons. Zondi passed away unexpectedly on Monday morning after suffering a heart attack. According to reports, he complained of chest pains and was then rushed to hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. The Citizen revealed that Zondi suffered another heart attack two years ago but recovered fully.

Eddie joined metro FM in the late 90s. Due to the longevity of his service on air, many people were surprised to hear that he was still only 47. According to the SABC, Zondi had worked at Metro FM for over 18 years. At the time of his death, he was hosting the Romantic Repertoire on Sundays from 3 to 6pm. With a listenership of 1.8 million, the Romantic Repertoire was (or is) one of the station’s most popular shows. It seems like the gap Zondi left will be hard to fill. It is still unknown whether Metro FM will replace Zondi or introduce a new show on Sunday Afternoons.

Zondi was an avid soccer fan. His favourite local team was Orlando Pirates. On Tuesday, the team’s chairperson, Dr Irvin Khoza, sent his condolences to the Zondi family. Khoza said Eddie’s soothing voice was what came first to his mind when he heard about his sad and sudden passing. He said Eddie’s support for Orlando Pirates was unwavering. He described him as a gentle, loving and caring man. “We should honour him by committing ourselves to be gentle and peaceful in our daily endeavours,” Khoza said.

The SABC reported that Zondi’s memorial service will take place today (19th of June) at the Standard Bank arena, Johannesburg, between 11:00 and 15:00. He will be laid to rest on Sunday. Zondi is survived by his wife Phakamile.
