President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla homestead is once again under an investigative eye as a bid by the Democratic Alliance for a report on the residence’s upgrades has been deemed urgent by the  Western Cape High Court earlier this week.

“This is a victory for accountability and transparency,” reported Lindiwe Mazibuko, the DA’s parliamentary leader who also announced that the application will commence on February 18.

According to the DA, the report had eventually been finalised after being postponed for nine months and the matter was ruled to be heard following the party insisting the “Nkandlagate scandal and its subsequent cover-up” was an issue of public concern.

“This report must contain information that is of considerable interest to voters who will be voting for their public representatives next year,” Mazibuko reports.

The Cape High Court was approached by Mazibuko who submitted an order pushing the Department of Public Works to provide the her a copy a report containing details of over 200-million rand’s worth of security upgrades for the president’s private Nkandla homestead in KwaZulu-Natal.

“This was following the questionable rejection of my application to gain access to the document through the Promotion of Access to Information Act,” said Mazibuko.

Last Tuesday, the Minister of Public Works Thulas Nxesi reported he believes the DA’s application was submitted with the lone intention of gaining political points.

Nxesi claims the leading opposition party’s agenda was made apparent when it was noticed that president Zuma was listed as a respondent in the matter.

“The truth is that the DA is obsessed with the president to such an extent they cannot differentiate between their own narrow political interest and the public interest,” argued Nxesi.

However, Mazibuko insisted her party did not need relief of any sort from Zuma.

Earlier this year, irregularities were found in the Nkandla task team report released by Nxesi regarding the procurement process for the upgrade. Further investigation was recommended.
