Linda ‘Mr Magic’ Sibiya’s dismissal two weeks ago may have opened a space for a new DJ. Sibiya was fired at the end of January following allegations of corruption. It is alleged that Mr Magic’s company, Magic Communications, defrauded Edcon of R1.8 million. Last week in a press conference that was held at the Durban City Hall, Mr Magic, who currently works as a Tv presenter, said he loved working as a radio DJ and would take his job back if he was rehired. However, the Vuka Mzansi Breakfast Show, which he hosted since 2008, is now being hosted by DJ Sgqemeza (Sipho Mbatha), while Khathide ‘Tshathugodo’ Ngobe hosts the afternoon drive.
Although both DJ Sgqemeza and Tshathugodo are energetic, many listeners think their shows don’t suit them. It is unknown if the changes that have been made since Mr Magic’s dismissal are temporary or permanent.There is a rumour going around that Alex Nhlanhla Mthiyane of Gagasi 99.5 FM may return to Ukhozi FM. Mthiyane used to host Ukhozi FM’s Vuka breakfast show in the early 2000s. He left the station about ten years ago (2004) after landing a job in the government. In 2006, he joined the then newly founded Gagasi 99.5 FM. Since then he has been hosting the Alex and the Crew breakfast show, which is popular among urban youth in KwaZulu-Natal.
If Mthiyane does return to Ukhozi FM, he will probably be given the breakfast show. DJ Sgqemeza would most likely return to the afternoon drive. We don’t know what would happen to Tshatha, who sounded very excited to host the afternoon drive. Mthiyane hasn’t been heard on Gagasi FM for a few days, resulting in his fans suspecting that he could indeed be leaving the station. When his fans asked him about the rumours of his return to Ukhozi FM, he didn’t say whether they were true or not. He just said he was on leave.
