Anxiety continues to mount with each hour that former South African President Nelson Mandela remains in a critical condition in a Pretoria hospital. The number of well-wishers outside the hospital has grown since it was announced that Mandela’s condition had deteriorated to critical status. The presidency has kept the country and media updated on the elderly icon’s condition while he receives treatment for his recurring lung condition.

Gatherings of family elders and people of importance when it comes to state matters have been held at the Mandela residence in Qunu, Eastern Cape. What got the public into a state of panic was the news that some elders had been to the private gravesite which is the final resting place for Mandela family members. The media reported that cars had been seen at the gravesite while the rest of the family was embroiled in meetings behind closed doors.

It has emerged that family elders in Qunu have expressed their wish to see Mandela in hospital. Some are expected in Pretoria on Wednesday. Many believe that the Mandela family is following certain rituals and traditions that are observed when a family prepares for the death of an extremely ill loved one.

UDM leader Bantu Holomisa, the Public Service and Administration Minister Lindiwe Sisulu and Chief Bhovulengwe of the AbaThembu royal council are just some of those who were invited to the meetings at the Mandela homestead.

Messages of love and support for the man who is synonymous with freedom and equality have been coming in from all over the world. Others have taken to social networks to share their prayers for a man who has inspired millions around the world. It is interesting to see that some people pray for Nelson Mandela’s speedy recovery while the majority pray for his eternal freedom from his illness.
