Johan Kotze was dubbed “Modimolle Monster” by the media and South African public when horrific details of his crimes emerged. On Monday, he was found guilty of arranging the rape and torture of his wife and murdering her 19 year-old son. He acquired the services of Andries Sithole, Pieta Mohlake and Sello Mphaka to carry out his deadly plan. The men were also found guilty of assaulting Ina Bonnette, Kotze’s wife, with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
The court found that Kotze had premeditated the brutal rape of his wife and the murder of her son Conrad with the three other men accused in the case. All four men were found guilty on all the charges pertaining to the rape of Ina Bonnette. On the charge of murdering Conrad Bonnette, only two of the accused were found guilty, Johan Kotze and Andries Sithole.
It was alleged that Kotze had threatened his co-accused with the same fate as Conrad Bonnette if they did not participate in the rape of his wife. The men claimed that he had even told them how lucky they were to have the opportunity to have sex with a white woman.
Though there were some inconsistencies in the complainant’s testimony, Judge Bert Bam attributed those to her traumatized state. He said: “It wouldn’t have been strange if she was at times unsure of events.” Bam reiterated that Bonnette was only human and had been under emotional duress. He found that her testimony could be relied on as the truth.
Ina Bonnette did not offer any comment after the verdict was passed except: “I am okay.” Johan Kotze turned and embraced friends in court before the police led him away to the holding cells. The spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority felt that justice had been served and hoped that the sentence would be as severe as the crime. The guilty men will appear at the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Tuesday so that arguments in mitigation of sentencing will be heard.
