Retired Ukhozi FM presenter Siphiwe ‘Muvo’ Maphalala (Mr Brown) died of stroke on Tuesday morning at Kingsway Hospital in Amanzimtoti, reports Isolezwe. He was 69. It is reported that he had been suffering from stroke for a long time.
Station manager Bonga Mpanza said his passing is a great loss to the station. Mr Brown worked for Ukhozi FM for 31 years, from 1978 to 2009. However, according to Isolezwe, he was still associated with the station and provided support when needed. Among other shows, he hosted Ngidlalele, which was very popular, especially among youth. It is probably the show by which most people will remember him.
Those he worked with described him as a man who respected his job and other people. Retired station manager Bhodloza Welcome Nzimande expressed sadness over Maphalala’s passing. They started working for Ukhozi FM on the same day (01 August 1978). Nzimande said: “I am very saddened by Maphalala’s passing. The way he respected me, you could not tell that we started working at the same time.”
Although the date of the funeral could not be confirmed, Mr Brown’s wife told Isolezwe that it is likely to be on Saturday the 15th of March. Maphalala is survived by his wife and six children.
