World-famous South African athlete Oscar Pistorius, also known as “The Blade Runner”, allegedly shot his girlfriend dead on Valentine’s day. According to reports, this incident took place in the early hours of the day, around 3 am. Early reports indicated that he mistook her for a burglar. However, the police later rubbished those claims.
Police spokeswoman Brigadier Denise Beukes told reporters that the police were unaware of that theory. She said: “The SA Police Service were just as surprised this morning to hear on the radio that allegations had been made that the deceased had been perceived to be a burglar.”
It is unclear what may have prompted Pistorious to shoot his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Steenkamp was a 30-year old model from Port Elizabeth. Her friends described her as a the sweetest, kindest soul.
Most recent reports indicate that her shooting was no accident. It is said that screams and gunfire erupted around 3 am at Pistorious’s home. A neighbour said she heard three gun shots, followed by ten minutes of silence, then three more. This makes a total of seven shots. Some people believe that if there were screams, Pistorious must have known who he was shooting ten minutes later. There are speculations that the last three shots were meant to finish off the victim.
Steenkamp was shot twice in the head, once in the arm and once in the leg.
It is reported that the estate in which Pistorious lives has been voted the most secure in South Africa. Denise Beukes said there was no sign of forced entry at Pistorius’s home. “The premises are fairly secure. This is a fairly secure estate.” This makes it sound somewhat absurd that he may have been fearing for his life when he shot his girlfriend seven times.
According to Beukes, “There’s previously been incidents of allegations of domestic disputes at the home of the accused.”
Beukes said the police were talking to neighbours who heard disturbances earlier in the evening and around the time of the shooting.
There are previous reports which depict Pistorious as a reckless, rude and arrogant person. He has been arrested before for drunken driving. His ex-girlfriend once revealed that “he is certainly not what most people think he is”.
Pistorious is currently in police custody and is due to appear in court on Friday on a charge of murder. An SABC reporter said the state was expected to oppose Pistorious’s bail application. She went on to say, “His lawyer will have to prove exceptional circumstances why he should be released on bail.”
