The police have dismissed the rumours doing the rounds that the killing of Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa was a contract killing which was directly aimed at the soccer star. A top police detective, Maj-Gen Norman Taioe dismissed this information, saying that there is no evidence that the killers had specifically meant to kill Meyiwa. He added that the gun that ended up killing him had not initially been aimed at him.

Senzo Meyiwa was shot and killed on Sunday evening at his girlfriend’s house in Vosloorus. This is the home of his controversial actor and singer girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo. According to information made available by the police, the soccer legend and his friends were just leaving the house when two men entered while another one remained outside, ostensibly as a sentry. The police adds that when the two men were in the house, one of Senzo’s friends bumped into another and a scuffle ensued, which resulted in the soccer star being shot in the upper part of the body. The three intruders are said to have fled the scene of the crime with a stolen cellphone as soon as the shooting occurred. Meanwhile, the police, according to the Police Commissioner, Rhiya Phiyega have upped the reward for information leading to the arrest of the two men that are responsible for the shooting. The reward has been placed at R250 000.

Reacting to the death of Senzo Meyiwa, his father, Sam Meyiwa said it felt like Senzo had died with a part of him. He added that he hoped that the police caught up with the perpetrators so that he could ask them why they killed his son. The Chairman of Orlando Pirates Dr Irvin Khoza flew to Umlazi in KwaZulu Natal on Monday to discuss funeral arrangements with Senzo’s family. There is anticipation that the shot stopper’s funeral would be held during the weekend.

The PSL has, in honour of Meyiwa, postponed the Soweto derby that was scheduled for the upcoming weekend. The Chief Executive Officer of the PSL, Brand de Villiers confirmed that the match which had been lined up for Saturday had been postponed out of respect for Senzo Meyiwa.

It was reported on Monday that a special task team had been set up to investigate Meyiwa’s murder. The manhunt for his killers continues.
