A seven year old girl from Kentucky survived a plane crash that occurred in the early hours of Friday evening in which the rest of her family members were killed. She managed to walk a distance of more than two kilometres to go and find help, it has been reported.

Sailor Gutzler, from rural Kentucky, was travelling with her family in a small aircraft when it developed engine trouble. It contacted air traffic control about that and it appears that it crashed immediately afterwards. Sailor’s parents, Marty and Kimberly Gutzler, her older sister, Piper and cousin Sierra Wilder all died in the crash. When she discovered what had happened, the little girl got up, and using light from the torch she had fashioned from a stick she had picked up, walked from the wreckage to the nearest light that she could see. She was walking through very rough terraine and bleeding from the nose, arms and legs, she knocked on the door of Larry Wilkins. Says Mr Wilkins “I come to the door and there’s a little girl, 7 years old, bloody nose, bloody arms, bloody legs, one sock, no shoes, crying,”

Mr Wilkins went on to carry the little girl onto his couch and to dial 911 for further help while he tried the best he could to clean up the little girl. Little Sailor was taken to Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, Kentucky and released early Saturday morning. According to Kentucky State Police Sgt. Dean Patterson, Federal Aviation Administration officials arrived at the crash site to try to determine why the small Piper PA-34 crashed. He added that the bodies of those that had died in the crash had been sent to Louisville for autopsies.

According to neighbours, Marty and Kimberly Gutzler had lived in this rural part of Illinois all their lives and Marty was the man who ran the furniture store in the area which had been left for him by his father. The couple had been well known and well liked by all according to a neighbour called Carla Povolish.
