The two siblings in the murder case in which the Stellenbosch family was found dead by neighbours on Tuesday morning after being attacked by an unknown assailant will be key in putting a face to the murder, it has been reported.

The sixteen year old girl, who is a member of the Stellenbosch family that was hacked to death recently underwent surgery on Tuesday evening and was reported to be in a stable but critical condition. This was reported by Ms Meg Fargher, the headmistress of Somerset College, where Marli van Breda was a grade 11 pupil,  and was confirmed by the clinic where she is being attended.

The van Breda family was found on Tuesday morning hacked to death apparently with an axe. The bodies of parents, Martin, 54, his wife, 55 and their son Rudi were found in their De Zalze Golf Estate on Tuesday morning while sixteen year old Marli was alive but in a critical condition and was rushed to hospital. Only their twenty year old son, Henri was found with minimal injuries and is said to be helping the police with their investigations. The De Zalze Homeowners Association chairperson Eben Potgieter told the media that they had found no security breach, adding that there was an 8km fence surrounding the estate and there were security cameras around the property.

The family has been described by many in the neighborhood as being a stunning, fun loving family that was very close. The neighbours expressed disbelief at what had happened since Martin was a quiet, calm man and Teresa was excited about going to Italy. There is speculation that a family member may have been involved in the tragedy but most of the neighbours have dismissed this, saying that the van Bredas were a closely knit family that had not shown any evidence of tension in them. It is reported that the youngest son, Martin, who was found by neighbours with a phone in his hand, as well as the sixteen year old daughter, will be key in the investigation into what transpired on that fateful Monday night. The police have remained tight-lipped on the progress over their investigations into the gruesome murders opting only to stick to the facts of the matter.
