The New Year began on a dull note for South Africa as a fatal accident involving two sedans took place on the N4 road, claiming seven lives, including that of a two-year-old child. According to the Mpumalanga Provincial Community Safety Department, five of the deceased were in one of the sedans while the other two victims were in the second one and both drivers are amongst the dead.
According to initial reports from the Mpumalanga Provincial Community Safety Department, one of the vehicles apparently lost control and swerved into oncoming traffic, resulting in a disastrous head-on collision which left both vehicles severely destroyed, with passengers having little to no chances of survival.
However, one passenger, whose identity is yet to be released, reportedly survived the crash with serious injuries and was rushed to the nearest hospital for urgent medical attention. It is said that their condition remains critical.
Investigations are underway in order to determine the cause of the accident, with negligent driving under scrutiny. The exact sequence of events remains unestablished, with the officials working to determine whether excessive speed, fatigue or other avoidable factors played a role in the occurrence of the accident.
Jackie Macie, the MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, poured out his grief for the loss of life and further mentioned that crashes could be avoided if caution was exercised in roads by all motorists and that the N4 road way is a priority route and measures will be implemented continuously for the safety of the public. Macie went on to emphasize the shared responsibility between motorists and authorities in ensuring safer roads. The MEC extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and expressed hope for the injured survivor’s recovery.
As the Mpumalanga province reflects on these distressing events, authorities continue to emphasize the need for watchfulness and responsible behavior from all motorists on the roads. New Year’s celebrations are meant to usher in hope and joy but have often turned into mourning for many families.
