Two brothers who are believed to be responsible for the murder of Durban businessman Shailen Singh were arrested on New Year’s day. Singh, who reportedly owned a truck and security company, was shot and killed while seated in his vehicle in a parking lot in Umhlanga on Sunday, December 29, 2024. He was allegedly entrapped and shot a number of times, resulting in his death at the scene. The response from emergency services, including paramedics and reaction officers, was unfortunately unable to save him.

KwaZulu-Natal South African Police Services spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the arrests, stating that detectives from the Provincial Organised Crime: Murder and Robbery Unit apprehended the suspects on Wednesday, 1 January 2025. He reported that the two suspects were arrested and the two vehicles that were seen leaving the crime scene were recovered. The siblings suspected of committing the crime will appear in the Durban Magistrates Court on Friday, 3 January 2025. Their arrest came just one day after Singh’s funeral.

The Singh family has called for justice following this horrific murder. Mr Singh is survived by his wife and a newly born son. In their pursuit of justice, the family launched a Facebook page and started a petition to ensure a thorough investigation into the crime. The family demands accountability and has called for no bail for the suspects. A post on the page reads, “This tragedy has left a hole in our hearts. We demand that the authorities act swiftly, ensuring that the perpetrators are held accountable for their deeds. No bail, a fair trial and a crackdown on violent crime. It’s time for justice.”

While the arrest offers hope to the victim’s family, questions regarding the motive for the killing remain unanswered. Singh’s father, Pradeep Singh, expressed his grief, stating that even though the family is relieved by the progress in the case, they are still struggling to understand why his son had been the target.

As the investigation unfolds, the Singh family and the community continue to demand answers, hoping that justice will prevail in this tragic incident.
