South Africa is reeling from the sudden passing of Tsotsi star Presley Chweneyagae on May 27, 2025, at the age of 40. Born in Mafikeng, North West, Chweneyagae rose to global fame with his raw portrayal of a young gang leader in the 2005 film Tsotsi, which won South Africa’s first Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. His career also spanned roles in iNumber Number and The River, showcasing his versatility.

Chweneyagae’s family revealed he passed away from natural causes, with his uncle, Mzwakhe Sigudla, telling SABC News, “He struggled to breathe. Paramedics were called, but it was too late.” His agency, the Moonyeenn Lee Agency, called him a “South African icon” and one of the nation’s “most gifted and beloved actors.” Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie described him as a “true trailblazer — a storyteller who held the soul of a nation in his craft.”

Media reactions have been heartfelt both locally and beyond South African shores. The Washington Post noted Tsotsi’s global influence, while notable voices shared their grief online. Actor Terry Pheto, Chweneyagae’s Tsotsi co-star, wrote on Instagram, “I’m shocked and saddened by the news of Presley’s sudden passing. My heart goes out to his family and the rest of our friends and colleagues in the film industry. We shared an unforgettable moment when we won the Oscar. It’s a moment I will forever cherish. May his soul rest in peace.” Filmmaker Zamo Mkhize added on X, “He showed us what raw talent looks like. Rest in power.” Fans echoed this, with one writing on X, “He made us feel every emotion.”

Chweneyagae’s legacy as a cultural giant endures, from Mafikeng’s streets to the 2006 Academy Awards stage alongside director Gavin Hood. According to reports, he is survived by his wife and two children.
