LONDON – May 8, 2026 marks a historic milestone as the world celebrates the 100th birthday of Sir David Attenborough, the legendary naturalist whose calm, almost-whispered narrations have served as the soundtrack to our planet for more than seven decades.

From the early days of black-and-white television to today’s immersive 4K documentaries, Attenborough has transformed nature programming from a niche interest into a beloved global ritual.

In a recorded audio message released ahead of his centenary, Sir David confessed he had hoped for a quiet celebration but was left “completely overwhelmed” by the outpouring of affection.

“I’ve been completely overwhelmed by birthday greetings, from preschool groups to care home residents and countless individuals and families of all ages,” he said. “I simply can’t reply to each of you all separately, but I would like to thank you all most sincerely for your kind messages.”

Tributes have flooded in from across the globe, reflecting Attenborough’s unique status as a “secular saint” of the natural world.

• The Royal Family: King Charles III and Queen Camilla shared a touching carousel of photographs on the official Royal Instagram account, wishing Sir David a “very happy 100th birthday” and adding, “Enjoy your special celebration this evening!”

• Prince Harry: The Duke of Sussex penned a heartfelt essay for TIME magazine, describing Sir David as “an institutional pillar as essential to the national fabric as a cup of tea,” and praising his “genuine reverence and curiosity.”

• Leonardo DiCaprio: The Oscar-winning actor and environmentalist called Sir David “one of the most enduring champions of our shared planet,” highlighting how his work has reshaped global consciousness on conservation.

• Star-Studded Tribute: The WWF released a moving video featuring celebrities including Morgan Freeman, Dame Judi Dench, and David Beckham, with a spoken-word rendition of What a Wonderful World.

Born in 1926 — the same year as the late Queen Elizabeth II — Sir David’s extraordinary career has mirrored the evolution of broadcasting itself.

This evening, BBC One will broadcast a special live celebration from the Royal Albert Hall, hosted by Kirsty Young, featuring the BBC Concert Orchestra performing iconic musical scores from his most beloved series.

In a separate honour, the Natural History Museum announced a newly discovered species of parasitic wasp has been named Attenboroughnculus tau after him. He now has more than 50 species named in his honour.

While Sir David first captivated audiences by revealing the wonders of the natural world, his later years have been defined by his urgent warnings about its fragility. At 100, he remains humanity’s most trusted voice on nature — a calm and authoritative presence reminding us of both the beauty and vulnerability of our planet.

As Prince Harry noted, Sir David has spent a century delivering truth with patience, honesty, and wonder — leaving behind both an extraordinary gift and a profound responsibility for future generations.

Happy 100th Birthday, Sir David Attenborough.
