The South African arts community is in deep mourning following the passing of legendary actor Seputla Sebogodi on the evening of 15 July 2026, due to complications related to diabetes. Born on 31 October 1962, Sebogodi built an extraordinary career that spanned more than five decades in the creative industry. His immediate family confirmed the devastating news in an official media statement on Thursday, sharing their deep sadness and asking for privacy as they grieve their loss.
Highly multilingual and formally trained in speech at UNISA, Sebogodi possessed an array of diverse talents that translated seamlessly to both the stage and screen. On television, he became a beloved household name, most famously portraying the iconic Kenneth Mashaba on Generations. His television legacy also spans memorable roles in Bophelo ke Semphego, Suburban Bliss, Scandal! as Kgopolo, Redemption as Captain Mthethwa, The River as Mohumi Ditshweni, Gomora as Letsatsi, and The Republic as Moses, among many others. His versatility extended into major film and theatre productions, with notable roles including playing The Meu in the international epic The Woman King, Lazarus in Die Verhaal van Racheltjie de Beer, Skeel in Max and Mona, and a young Tsonga in Mr. Bones. On stage, he commanded audiences in acclaimed productions such as Big Dada as Idi Amin, Waiting for Godot as Estragon, The Meeting as Body Guard, and Mooi Street Moves as Stix.
