It has been a tense period for the community of Eldorado Park following the Boxing Day murder of a 22-year-old Gauteng crime warden Chesnay Patricia Keppler. The suspect is police officer Sergeant Mandla Buthelezi, who stands accused of using his service pistol to end Keppler’s life in what appears to have been a domestic dispute gone tragically wrong.

On Monday 6 January 2025, the Protea Magistrate’s Court postponed the case to February 26, 2025 to allow for further investigations. This move has not calmed the anger and heartbreak felt by Keppler’s family and the wider public, who are demanding justice for her.

According to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, Buthelezi allegedly arrived at Keppler’s home in Eldorado Park in a state vehicle, intoxicated, and on duty. What followed was a series of events that escalated quickly, which ended in a tragic incident. Buthelezi reportedly tried forcing Keppler and her friends into the vehicle while assaulting them in the process. However, these women managed to escape, locking themselves inside the house.

Buthelezi allegedly took his service firearm from the state vehicle, returned to the property and fired multiple shots through the kitchen window, which struck Keppler fatally. She was rushed to Baragwanath Hospital where she was declared dead upon arrival.

Buthelezi reportedly fled the scene and attempted to commit suicide by shooting himself but he survived. Buthelezi was admitted to hospital under police watch. He then proceeded to Moroka SAPS, where he was kept in custody awaiting trial.

Keppler’s family, who laid her to rest last weekend, are adamant that Buthelezi should not be granted bail, describing his actions as prearranged and abusive. Their grief is shared by the Eldorado Park community, who remember Keppler as a dedicated crime fighter and a beacon of hope in the fight against crime.

Meanwhile, the ANC Women’s League has not commented on the incident, but voices from other quarters, including crime prevention organizations, have lauded IPID for stepping in effortlessly. A video captured by Keppler’s friend during the assault is expected to play a pivotal role in court.

As the court proceedings drag on, questions about police accountability and the abuse of power remain firmly in the spotlight.
