The Kaizer Chiefs fraternity can start celebrating because it is ‘official’, Chiefs are the new PSL champions this season. Lamontville Golden Arrows did Chiefs a huge favour by beating Platinum Stars 2 – 1 at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Saturday.
It is nearly impossible for Chiefs to lose both of their two remaining games while Platinum Stars beat Nedbank Cup finalists SuperSport United by more than 10 – 0, which is what it would take for Platinum Stars to win the league this season.
I used the word ‘official’ above in a figurative sense because it is easy to tell that Chiefs have definitely won the league title. However, as discussed above, it is still mathematically possible for Platinum Stars to win it.
For Chiefs to be crowned Champions after their 29th game, they need to get one point. Even if they don’t get this point they will still win the league. They currently have a goal difference of 28 while that of Platinum Stars is 18. There is no way Platinum Stars can catch up with them. So next week Chiefs will just play for fun, without any pressure.
Chiefs will face Supersport United on the 15th of May at Peter Mokaba Stadium. Their last game will be against Pretoria University on the 18th of May at Mbombela Stadium.
