On Saturday, 16 September 2023, we came across a relatively cheap data bundle on MTN’s MoMo app and decided to purchase it without reading the fine print, only to find out that the bundle was actually 20% smaller than advertised.
The data bundle in question was advertised as 2.5 GB + 2.5 GB night data for R39. However, immediately after purchasing it, we noticed that only 4 GB of data was loaded. We then went back to the app to check if we had made the right selection and found that the advertised size of the bundle was in fact misleading.
The user purchases the bundle under the impression that they will get a total of 5 GB of data, as indicated with a large font on the app. However, just before confirming the purchase, it is written in a smaller font in the middle of the page that the bundle is 2 GB + 2 GB night. We did not notice this when we bought the bundle as our eyes focused on the larger font at the top.
We contacted MTN twice through their Facebook page. They said they would look into this and reply within three days. Unfortunately, they neither came back to us with an update nor fixed the pricing error. At the time of this writing, the 2 GB + 2 GB night data bundle was still advertised as 2.5 GB + 2.5 GB night on the MTN and MoMo apps, which is likely to mislead many unsuspecting clients. Hopefully you won’t be one of them. If you already are, let us know in the comments.
