MTN and Opera End Free Data Promotion

MTN has ended the 100MB free daily data promotion it ran in partnership with Opera.

It is back to reality for millions of MTN subscribers who enjoyed browsing the internet for free as part of the promotion that the mobile network offered in partnership with Opera for approximately a year.

According to an MTN agent we communicated with on Facebook a few weeks ago, the promotion was paused in January this year. However, two of our phones that we used to browse the internet for free since May last year only stopped working (connecting to the internet without data) in April.

As reported last year, MTN allowed Opera Mobile and Opera Mini users to use up to 100MB for free every day (or 3GB/month) for internet browsing purposes only (no downloads) if they enabled the “Data Savings” option. Based on the current cost of a 3GB monthly data bundle, it is safe to say this promotion saved each user at least R100 a month.

It is unclear when/if the promotion will return in the future. When or if it does, we will update this post.
