Controversial Durban business couple Shauwn and Sbu Mpisane have filed for divorce after 15 years of marriage.

It was reported on Tuesday that their divorce case was scheduled to appear before a judge at the Durban High Court on Wednesday.

The rumours of their split started circulating in August last year, around the time when their daughter Sbahle Mpisane was involved in a near-fatal car accident, which may have delayed their filing for divorce.

According to an article published by City Press last year, Shauwn was fed up with Sbu’s roving eye and suggested that they go separate ways.

However, there are also speculations that financial problems may have led to their divorce.

Shauwn and Sbu’s construction company Zikhulise Group is said to owe SARS over R200 million. Some of their business and personal assets have been seized in the past to recover unpaid taxes.

In the past few years, the couple’s businesses have been marred by allegations of fraud and corruption involving tender irregularities and crony capitalism.

Shauwn is the daughter of ANC struggle stalwart Florence Mkhize, who was Durban’s ward 75 councillor from 1994 until her death in 1999. It is reported that Mkhize is the original founder of Zikhulise Group. Following her death, her daughter took over as the director of the company and managed to secure government tenders worth over R1 billion.

At the peak of their success, the Mpisanes were known for throwing lavish, star-studded parties at their La Lucia mansion on New Year’s eve.

Although their date of marriage is unknown, in 2011 Sbu and Shauwn celebrated their 7th wedding anniversary, suggesting that they tied the knot in 2004.
