Sorrow struck the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) circles as news spread of the tragic loss of one of its officers, who was shot and killed in Pretoria West on the night of December 24th. This devastating incident has left colleagues and loved ones reeling with shock and grief. The police officer was fatally shot in her home located in Lotus Gardens, with initial reports indicating that her significant other is the alleged perpetrator of this terrible act.

According to TMPD spokesperson Isaac Mahamba, the suspect fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle shortly after the incident. The suspect was later apprehended in Limpopo, bringing a glimmer of relief amidst this tragedy. Mahamba further stated that the details surrounding the events leading up to this devastating incident remain unclear at this time. He emphasized that the matter is being diligently investigated by the South African Police Services (SAPS). As the investigation is still in its early stages, the department has not yet disclosed the identity of the murdered officer, as the process of notifying the family remains a priority.

It has been confirmed that the officer was tragically shot with a TMPD-issued firearm. While the motive behind the shooting has not been established, the TMPD has reassured the public that it is fully cooperating with SAPS, allowing them to lead the investigation and ensure justice is served. Acting Chief of Police, Nomsa Nhlapho, expressed her heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and the officer’s colleagues. Nhlapho also called on the public to respect the ongoing legal process as authorities work to uncover the truth.

This heartbreaking loss comes after another shocking tragedy in South Africa just months ago, where two Gauteng traffic officers were found dead in a suspected murder-suicide. In that case, Jane Kgaba allegedly shot her colleague, Dalindyebo Dineka, before taking her own life. Such incidents emphasize the alarming prevalence of domestic violence and the urgent need for meaningful interventions to address this societal issue.

The TMPD remains committed to supporting the bereaved family and colleagues of the fallen officer. Funeral and memorial service details will be shared once arrangements are finalized. For now, the department continues to mourn this irreplaceable loss while standing firm in its pursuit of justice.
