Ukhozi FM will announce 2019’s song of the year on Friday. DJ Zinhle’s popular track Umlilo, which was selected as the song of the year on several radio stations, is one of the songs tipped to be in the top 3.
Ukhozi FM will finally announce 2019’s song of the year on Friday, March 13, 2020. This was revealed on the station’s Twitter page on Wednesday. The top ten songs of the year, as voted by listeners, will be played on the afternoon drive, which airs from 3 to 6 pm.
In December last year, Ukhozi FM was prohibited by the court from announcing 2019’s song of the year or playing the top 10 due to a pending intellectual property case that had been opened by the SABC’s former employee Owen Ndlovu. This left listeners fuming, particularly maskandi fans, who were convinced that Ntencane’s song ‘Wawuthembeni’ would have been the crossover song of the year.
Ndlovu claimed that the ranking of the top 10 songs of the year according to the number of votes they received was his idea and accused the SABC of failing to pay him his dues. The case was expected to go to court on February 10. However, at the end of January Ndlovu withdrew the case.
Although the announcement is a bit delayed, listeners, especially those who voted for their favourite songs, will be pleased to know what the song of the year was on South Africa’s biggest radio station. Below is the list of songs that were in the top 10:
