Betrayal and Power Struggles: The Fallout Between Malema and Shivambu

As political tensions continue to rise within the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), the fractured relationship between party leader Julius Malema and his former deputy Floyd Shivambu has become the latest source of intrigue. On Monday, Malema made a chilling statement, warning Shivambu that he would expose him if pushed to do so. This warning has intensified scrutiny over the deteriorating bond between the two men, once viewed as close allies.

The rift between Malema and Shivambu dates back to August when Shivambu made the unexpected decision to leave the EFF and join Jacob Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party. Malema, who had once considered Shivambu a brother, expressed profound disappointment over the move. He claimed that the leadership of the EFF knew about Shivambu’s resignation but that Malema had been kept in the dark. The decision for Malema was a personal blow.

Shivambu, who was recently appointed as secretary general (SG) of the MK, has repeatedly emphasized that his decision to leave the red berets was not one he needed to discuss with Malema. For him, their relationship was political, not personal, and what seemed to be a brotherhood was in reality a transactional alliance. In a podcast interview, he described their dynamic as something akin to a “gangster relationship,” where they could not confront each other, even when one was in the wrong. This admission has further fueled the tensions between the two.

However, Malema revealed that despite their fallout, he had instructed his children to reach out to Shivambu should anything happen to him. He still regarded him as an important figure in his life even if that respect was not returned.

Malema has also not shied away from addressing the leadership issues within the EFF. While Shivambu has admitted to becoming uncomfortable with how the party operated, Malema has made it clear that those dissatisfied with the party’s direction are welcome to leave. For him, loyalty and transparency are non-negotiable and he will not tolerate disloyalty no matter the personal cost.

As the public fallout escalates, one of the more notable points of contention has been Shivambu’s close relationship with fellow EFF leader Dr. Mbuyiseni Ndlozi. When Shivambu referred to Ndlozi as a “brother,” it sparked accusations of division within the party. These tensions have spilled into social media, with Shivambu and EFF MP Sinawo Thambo exchanging barbs in a very public clash.

The ongoing drama within the EFF underscores a deeper and more complex struggle over loyalty, power and political principles. For Malema, this is not just a personal betrayal; it is a reminder of the high stakes involved in maintaining unity within a volatile political environment. As the battle over Shivambu’s departure continues, it raises larger questions about the future of the EFF and its ability to weather internal conflict.

This conflict between Malema and Shivambu is more than just a clash of personalities; it represents the challenges faced by a political party struggling to balance personal ambitions with collective goals. It will be interesting to see how Malema navigates the future of the EFF in the wake of this fracture, as Shivambu embarks on his new journey as MK SG.
