At least Eighteen commuters died on Monday morning when their bus overturned and rolled off a bridge in Meyerton in the Vaal. The accident left scores injured and the number of casualties is expected to rise.

It is alleged that the driver lost control of the vehicle, which hit the rails of the bridge and then plummeted 10 meters to the ground, landing on its side.

ER24 spokeswoman Vanessa Jackson said 18 people were dead, while Netcare 911 Jeff Wicks put the figure at 19.

Jackson said their figure is a preliminary one at this stage as emergency personnel are still working on the scene. Two who were critically injured were airlifted to hospital and about more than 52 injured were transported to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital near Soweto. The bus was still laying at the scene this afternoon and other people were still trapped under it.
