He decided to go past the barbershop for a haircut in Corlett Drive in Melrose. But then three armed men walked in and closed the door and robbed him of his personal accessories.

His manager Percy Adams said,”The one guy closed the door and told everyone to sit down and be calm, the other said ‘please give us your watch, earrings and that nice wedding ring'”. It was reported that the three armed men were blatantly looking towards robbing only McCarthy and that it was a well executed plan. There were about nine other customers inside the hair salon who offered to give their wallets and watches but the gang was there to rob Benni McCarthy.

“It is alleged that he had just come back from the airport and was at the barbershop at around 13:00. Three suspects, one armed, held all the patrons at gunpoint,” Spokesman Katlego Mogale said. “The one with the firearm went to the victim and stole his wristwatch, wedding ring and diamond earring. The suspects then fled in a black BMW with unknown registration.

“A case of armed robbery has been opened for investigation,” Mogale added. McCarthy however still went through to be on air in Johannesburg as an analyst on Supersport. No shots were fired at the scene and no one was hurt.
