Police said four men were expected to make their second court appearance for fraud in the Colenso Magistrate’s Court in Kwazulu-Natal on Thursday.
Major Thulani Zwane, the police spokesperson, said 20-year-old Stabiso Majiya, 33-year-old Sithuli Hlongwane, 23-year-old Mfanafuthi Shangase and 29-year-old Thandanani Smamane have been in custody since their arrest on Thursday the 24th of September.
Major Thulani Zwane, relating the events that led to the arrest of the four fraud suspects, said the police were alerted about a dubious looking vehicle parked near an automated teller machine (ATM) in Winterton, KwaZulu-Natal. The vehicle was located by the police who searched the four occupants and bank cards which belonged to other people were recovered. Police spokesperson, Major Thulani Zwane went on to say that the four suspects were also found in possession of more than one thousand rand cash which was suspected to be withdrawn at the Bergville, KwaZulu-Natal automated teller machine using one of the bank cards which was found on them.
It is said the four men were also expected of being involved in other fraud cases, in which victims were robbed of their bank cards and money was withdrawn from their accounts.
Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, the KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner complimented Winterton police officers as well as the Winterton community for alerting the police.
Ngobeni said they earnestly request the community to carry on working hand in hand with the police in fighting crime in KwaZulu-Natal.
