Kaizer Chiefs greatly improved their chances of winning the league this season after beating Bloemfontein Celtic 3 – 0 at the Free State Stadium yesterday, opening a 7-point gap between them and their arch-rivals Orlando Pirates, who are currently sitting at the second position in the log.
Kingston Nkatha scored an opening goal for Chiefs just 13 minutes into the game. In the second half Simphiwe Tshabalala (man of the match) and Josta Dladla also netted one goal each.
Chiefs now have 50 points and have seven games to play whereas Pirates have 43 points and eight games to play. The chances of Pirates successfully defending their championship this season are gradually waning. If both teams were to win all their remaining games, Chiefs would have 71 points and Pirates 67.
However, since Pirates are one match behind Chiefs, the actual point gap is 4. In their 23rd match, Pirates will face AmaZulu on Wednesday at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. The point gap will be 7 only if they lose that match. If they win they will still be in the game, and with both teams having 7 games to play, anything can still happen.
