The police have confirmed that they have arrested and detained for questioning, a 45 year old Johannesburg Metro Police Officer in connection with the shooting of two men in Dobsonville, Soweto in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Speaking to the media, police spokesman, Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said that according to the information that the police had, the suspect was walking along the street when he encountered the two victims talking to a certain woman. After joining the three, the policeman is reported to have informed that pair that he intended to leave with the woman. This, apparently did not go down well with the pair and, as can be expected, an argument ensued. In the scuffle that followed, the suspect then pulled out a gun and shot the two men. One man was shot in the right arm while the other was shot through the upper part of the body. The twenty-five year old man who was shot through the upper part of the body is said to have died on the scene while fellow victim sustained a serious injury in the arm and had to be hospitalized as a result. Nothing has been reported on the woman who was at the scene.

The police also reported that, when questioned by the police, the suspect insisted that the two men wanted to hijack him. He is reported to have been travelling in his personal car prior to the incident as he was off duty at the time when the crime was committed. Makhubela also informed members of the media that the man was arrested on the scene of the crime and would appear in the Protea Magistrate Court soon. The Metro Police Spokesman, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the his department would institute an internal investigation into the incident.
