What started off as a bad year for a Western Cape family after their new born baby disappeared from the Groote Schuur Hospital in the early hours of New Year’s Day has turned out very well since the baby has been found. According to the police, investigations led the police to an informal settlement called Enkanini and the baby was found in good health.

The drama started in the early hours of New Year’s Day when, during her rounds, a nurse in the hospital noticed that one of the cots was empty. She then proceeded to wake up the mother of the child to enquire about the whereabouts of the baby. When the mother of the baby screamed, that was when everyone panicked and knew that something was wrong. The frantic search for the baby throughout the hospital did not yield any results and consequently the police were called in.

The mother of the baby, Noveliswa Fem-Fem, who has two other children, had been in hospital to be attended to due to a nagging high blood pressure as a result of her childbirth. Her husband, Sotshisa Nyekelwa, was not a happy man at all. He expressed concern at the state of security at the maternity wing of the hospital and got very emotional when he discussed the incident. He said he was disappointed that his son had been kidnapped while the hospital staff was present. He had said that all he wanted was to have his baby back and did not intend doing anything to the person who had kidnapped his son.
