The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has relieved Advocate Sibonelo Nomvalo of his duties as secretary-general, citing concerns over councillor selection, internal factionalism and several organisational matters.
The decision, effective October 22, 2026, was announced by the Office of the President of the MK Party on Thursday night.
In a statement, the party cited concerns relating to dual remuneration, delays in campaign materials, changes within the parliamentary caucus and parliamentary administration that were reportedly not communicated to the President, National Officials and the Presidency Collective.
The party also raised concerns about the establishment of high-level deployment committees without the knowledge of the relevant leadership structures.
According to the statement, these matters raised concerns about organisational coordination, internal communication, accountability and adherence to established party procedures.
The party acknowledged Nomvalo’s contribution to the organisation and wished him well in his future endeavours. He was also requested to cooperate with the relevant structures to ensure a smooth and orderly handover of his duties.
Following Nomvalo’s removal, Lindiwe Mtshali has been appointed acting secretary-general.
She will work in consultation with national chairperson Mxolisi Phakathi to ensure continuity in the coordination, administration and organisational affairs of the party.
National spokesperson Sifiso Mahlangu will also assume additional responsibilities associated with the office of the deputy secretary-general, sharing these functions with Mtshali. He will retain his position as national spokesperson.
The party said the interim arrangement was intended to maintain organisational continuity, strengthen coordination and accountability, and ensure the effective implementation of decisions taken by its authorised leadership structures.
All national, provincial, regional and branch structures have been instructed to cooperate with the appointed officials and ensure that administrative processes, official communication and reporting arrangements comply with the party’s constitution, resolutions and established procedures.
Nomvalo’s removal marks another change in the MK Party’s secretary-general position, which has seen a succession of office-bearers since the party’s formation.
He was the seventh person to hold the position, having been appointed in March 2026. His tenure lasted approximately seven months before he was relieved of his duties.
The previous office-bearers were Thanduxolo Dyodo, Sihle Ngubane, Arthur Zwane (appointed twice), Dr Sifiso Maseko, Floyd Shivambu and Dr Bongani Mncwango.
Mtshali now becomes the eighth person to take up the position, albeit in an acting capacity.
The party reiterated its commitment to unity, discipline, collective leadership and accountability, urging members to avoid unnecessary divisions and place the interests of the organisation above individual considerations.
