Two months after shooting his girlfriend ‘by mistake’, Oscar Pistorius is resuming his public and social life. In a recent statement, the Pistorius family told the media that Oscar has been spending time with acquaintances and friends of Reeva Steenkamp in an effort to mourn and deal with his loss. Oscar spent the evening “reconnecting” with friends at the Kitchen Bar in Fourways last Saturday.

Barry Roux and Kenny Oldwage, the Pistorius defence team, were successful in their appeal of the paralympian’s bail conditions. Oscar Pistorius is free to travel, compete in athletic competitions and of course, go out with friends and socialise over drinks.

The Mail and Guardian reported that Pistorius decided to leave the Kitchen Bar when he started receiving unwanted public attention. Anneliese Burgess is the spokesperson for the Pistorius family and she said that Pistorius found the attention “overwhelming”. Finding himself overwhelmed, Oscar left the Kitchen Bar but did not go home. He went to another establishment, Buddha Ta, just a walk away from Kitchen Bar. A short while later he was seen leaving Buddha Ta.

The death of Reeva Steenkamp at the hands of her new lover sent shock waves through South Africa and the sporting community as a whole. Without delay, international media houses descended on South Africa on the morning of the shooting to hear for themselves what exactly happened on Valentine’s Day at the Pistorius residence.

The public is torn between those who think that Oscar murdered Reeva and should be brought to justice and others who are convinced that Oscar is telling the truth in his version of events. The ‘Pistorians’ fall in the latter group. This Twitter group even goes as far as saying that Reeva was not an ideal partner for their hero because of the way she exposed her body in public among a host of other reasons.

The Pistorius family expressed their disappointment at the statements made by the ‘Pistorians’. The family said: “The disregard that is shown by some, specifically those commenting via social media, for the profound pain that Reeva’s family and friends are going through is very troubling.”

The trial of Oscar Pistorius continues on 4 June 2013.
