It has been reported that 2012 Comrades Marathon winner Ludwick Mamabolo used a banned substance, which helped him to win the marathon.

According to the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS), Mamabolo tested positive for methylhexaneamine, an unsafe stimulant that is known to improve an athlete’s stamina. Every year SAIDS tests all athletes in the top 10 for drugs to ensure that they do not cheat.

A second test will be conducted. If its results confirm the findings of the first one, Mamabolo will lose his title and be banned from running the Comrades Marathon for two years.

Bongmusa Mthembu from KwaZulu-Natal, who took the second position, will be crowned winner if Mamabolo is stripped of his title.
