Transnet workers are expected to go on strike on the 16th of January 2013. It is said that they will be striking against the termination of the overtime. It is well known that many people rely on the overtime to earn decent salaries. At Transnet, a person with a basic salary of R13 000 can earn well over R20 000 after doing overtime.
However, this state-owned freight giant is in the process of terminating overtime in order to hire more people, in line with the government’s strategies to create jobs and curb the high rate of unemployment South Africa is currently facing. Naturally, workers are totally against this as it may put them in serious financial problems.
There are a number of workers who live lavish lifestyles that they cannot afford with their basic salaries alone. Some of them live in big houses and drive fancy cars. Termination of the overtime could leave them insolvent. Hence, they want the company to increase salaries if it terminates the overtime. The strike starts just after midnight. It is unknown how long it will take and how much economic impact it will have. However, if discussions drag on, the company could lose billions.
